Official at ACORN Funder to Head Corporation for National and Community Service

President Obama announced he plans to nominate Patrick Corvington to be chief executive of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which oversees Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America. Big Government readers will remember that “the Corporation” assumed a prominent role on the infamous NEA Conference call, where ”the Corporation’s” Nell Abernathy joined White House and NEA officials to nudge artists to produce works supporting the Obama Administration’s legislative priorities.

Although the charity Corvington works for, Annie E. Casey Foundation of Baltimore, Maryland, has granted funding to ACORN during his tenure, it is unclear if Corvington has ties to ACORN.

Nonetheless, Corvington is part of the same cluster of organizations that provides financial and other support for ACORN which is a longtime fixture in the activist community.

Since 2001 the Annie E. Casey Foundation has pumped at least $1,705,500 into the ACORN network, according to philanthropy database information.

Of the $1,705,500, at least $850,500 was earmarked for ACORN operations in Baltimore, Maryland, home of the ACORN branch office first shown in the recent undercover videos that debuted on BigGovernment.com. Those videos show James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles pretending to be a pimp and a prostitute and receiving mountains of advice on evading laws pertaining to tax evasion and prostitution (among other things).

The Annie E. Casey Foundation is a major funder of other groups on the left.

Looking at just the first letter of the alphabet, its grant recipients are labor federation AFL-CIO, abortion rights think tank Alan Guttmacher Institute, and liberal policy shop the Aspen Institute.

Although most of its grants go to groups on the political left, the foundation has funded at least one think tank on the political right. It has provided a few grants to the American Enterprise Institute.

ACORN: Campaign Issue?

This political ad first came out a couple weeks ago, when James and Hannah’s video sting first broke, but is still worth noting. If Ken Cuccinelli, running for Attorney General in Virginia this year, gets traction with this ad, look for the political floodgates to overwhelm ACORN. No matter how many people rise to their defense, if ACORN becomes politically toxic…game over. Watch this race:

Giles: If You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going

Ever since Hannah and O’Keefe boldly cracked open ACORN with their video expose of  ACORN counselling dirty deeds on our dime, I’ve been inundated with emails and interviews asking me how wifey and I raised such a plucky kid.

Matter of fact, because of the insane interest in Hannah and what makes her tick, I’m brewing up a book on raising righteous and rowdy girls in today’s culture.  Evidently, the Giles formula works.  I think I’ll name it Contra Mundus Mamas.  How does that sound?

hellbook

Until that book pops on the scene, though, there is another option. If you’re curious and you would like to get a taste of how the weird Giles family rolls when up against a rock and a hard place, you should check out my latest book, If Youre Going Through Hell, Keep Going!.  It’s a tasty and short read that’ll give you the proper piss-n-vinegar perspective to plow through the various crud life slaps us all with.  Details below:

Doug Giles, popular Townhall.com columnist and father of Hannah Giles, who played the prostitute in the now famous nation-rocking ACORN expose, has just released a new book that shows us how to thrive when things “stink worse than a sundried manatee carcass.”

Giles’ latest tome, If You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going! (Bridge-Logos 2009) is for people who are experiencing a rough earthly patch and are looking for some powerful, practical and faith-filled answers to help them plow through life’s mud.

In this fast and funky read Giles points out that if you’re currently being stretched then you’re in line for growth and . . . you’re in good company.  Some of the most powerful and amazing folks who have ever graced this globe have gone through prolonged periods of internal and external crud that wasn’t enjoyable.  And get this: They actually grew—even prospered—through their pain.

Yep, they didn’t blame God or man, turn into atheists, start smoking crack or become bi-curious during their college years just because things didn’t go their way.  No, they cowboyed up, saw their trials as a gift, embraced whatever discipline God/life had for them, exercised their faith when under fire, and through it all became holy winners and not haggard whiners.

If you don’t feel geared up for difficult times or you’re currently getting tossed around by life’s junk like David Dukes in a Lil Wayne mosh pit, Doug’s book, If You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going!, will prep you to plow through life’s dense fog via the principles of God.

In addition, this book will give you a sneak peek into the attitudes Giles instilled in his daughter Hannah to give her the internal fortitude to infiltrate ACORN and, along with O’Keefe and Breitbart, bring it to its knees and remain standing with unwavering confidence amidst massive antagonistic attacks.

Get ready to learn, laugh, become offended (possibly) and thoroughly equipped to milk the bad in life for all of its good.

Foreword by Maj. General Paul Vallely, US Army (retired).

$1 per copy goes to the Scott Vallely Memorial Fund, which supports our troops and their families.

You can purchase If You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going! online at clashradio.com, amazon.com, and various other fine online or terrestrial bookstores.

ACORN Founder Wade Rathke: “There Is a Different Culture”

Earlier this week, ACORN founder Wade Rathke brought his traveling “everyone-is-against-us” road show to DC to promote his new book, Citizen Wealth. The book doesn’t contain surprises; a 200 page polemic laying out a stale progressive agenda for America. What was interesting though, was a rare glimpse from ACORN’s long-time Chief Organizer into the current scandal now overwhelming the organization. Rathke did not disappoint.

I should note that on a personal level Rathke is easy-going and downright charming. And having been around the political/policy block for decades, he’s mastered a tight control of messaging. A control that makes his successor, Bertha Lewis, sound like an amateur college activist by comparison. That said, his Q & A exchange was fascinating. (Video below from Founding Bloggers.)

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

But Rathke, for all his political prowess, does slip up. While extrapolating about why he and ACORN’s leadership made an executive decision not to disclose his brother’s nearly $1 million embezzlement, Rathke explains that they were afraid their opponents would “weaponize” the crime in order to destroy ACORN. He went on to suggest that the current turmoil engulfing ACORN justifies the decision to cover-up the embezzlement scandal for eight years. He clearly believes that the end (ACORN’s existence) justifies the means (a cover-up). Rathke still doesn’t appear to acknowledge his brother’s crime for what it was. He refers to his brother’s embezzlement as a “misappropriation” of funds. His moral calculus, while seemingly sincere, is disturbing. Other organizations that truly attempt to aid low-income families (without political agendas) should be alarmed.

Another item of interest came at the end of this interview clip. Rathke talked about the “subculture of organizing” and intimated that it was much different than the broader culture we inhabit. Taking a rare jab at ACORN, he noted that “There is a different culture,” a distinction he believes ACORN doesn’t fully appreciate. Different culture, indeed.

A couple weeks ago, Mike Flynn noted that ACORN’s employee manual states that, “ACORN’s lifeblood is conflicts with targets outside the organization.”

It’s clear that this organization embraces and advocates a kind of bunker mentality. Rathke’s observations in the video reflect that.

Political philosophies aside, the behavior displayed by ACORN employees in the videos of James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles is unacceptable by any standard. But perhaps it is, in fact, a glimpse into a subculture that has, until recently, scarcely been analyzed.

In Rathke’s—and ACORN’s—world, there is a constant struggle with ambiguous and allegedly powerful enemies. Mistakes should be avoided – not because they are objectively wrong – but because they could be “weaponized.”

It’s On! California To Investigate ACORN. And O’Keefe?

From the Sacramento Bee:

Attorney General Jerry Brown’s office has opened an investigation into the controversy surrounding videos that purportedly show members of community organizing group ACORN giving advice on how to open a brothel.

In a letter to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger dated Sept. 25, Chief Deputy Attorney General James M. Humes said the office has “opened an investigation of both ACORN and the circumstances under which ACORN employees were videotaped.” The governor had asked Brown two weeks ago to look into the incidents.

The probe was sparked by a series of hidden-camera videos in which a couple posing as a pimp and a prostitute are advised on how to set up a prostitution business by people identified as workers for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. The videos were taken in Washington D.C., San Diego, San Bernardino and cities in several other states.

Members of the organization are also under investigation in other states for alleged irregularities in registering voters.

Schwarzenegger issued a statement praising Brown’s decision to investigate. “I am outraged and deeply concerned by these allegations,” the statement said. “If these reports are true, they warrant prosecution under the fullest extent of the law.”

Podesta Spends Soros’ Money Stupidly

This week’s Washington Times column:

A telling event occurred on Sept. 15, Day 6 of the drip, drip, drip ACORN video rollout. President Obama met for lunch with former President Bill Clinton at trendy Il Mulino in New York City.

For the second consecutive day, the New York Post featured the ACORN scandal on its cover – complete with James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles in their outrageous “pimp and ho” costumes.

Does anyone think the president and the former president were unaware that the city in which they were dining was mesmerized by the ACORN scandal – especially since ACORN had bragged that its employees had kicked Mr. O’Keefe and Ms. Giles out of their New York office?

The Sept. 15 edition of the New York Post explored the political angles and directed attention to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s investigation into why an ACORN office in its jurisdiction helped instruct a prospective brothel owner how to hide his prostitution proceeds in a tin in his backyard.

No one in the morally superior media world has asked, why did Mr. Obama have lunch with Mr. Clinton that day? So let me take a guess, and it seems like an obvious answer. Mr. Obama, under siege by a video-a-day expose that was exposing the Democratic Party to an avalanche of consequences (ACORN defunded in the House and Senate, ACORN delinked from the census, etc.), needed advice from the last president to navigate through a major political scandal.

On this day, neither the president or the former president, nor the media knew how many more videos were coming.

The next day, Clinton Chief of Staff John Podesta, the Democratic Party’s top fix-it guy with control over much of the left’s well-funded vast attack machinery (think George Soros, the Tides Foundation, et al.), was among a small advisory group placed in charge of investigating the matter.

With the mainstream media continuing to ignore the evidence on the tapes, Mr. Podesta is now clearly in charge of feeding them information about his well-structured investigation into the investigators. The ACORN internal probe is a “war room” aimed at destroying the messengers and is not meant to clean up major corruption.

Since Mr. Podesta was appointed to investigate ACORN, the only thing investigated has been the investigators, Mr. O’Keefe, Ms. Giles and the publisher of the journalism behind it, yours truly.

Left Employing Sexist Tactics to Discredit Giles, O’Keefe?

Word on the street is that the Left, the “equal pay, pro-women” left is desperately searching for lewd photos of Hannah Giles.

Savor that bit of irony for a moment.

HannahGiles

The Left is seeking to employ sexism as a way to take down yet another young woman. A rationale after Ike Turner’s own heart! Leftist ideology replaces “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen” as the modern-day female prison; step out of line and you will be virtually and emotionally abused by the burdensome patriarchal undercurrent that powers this political rationale. They’re only for choice if that “choice” is the genocide of the female sex; they’re only for female empowerment if it doesn’t disrupt the fragile liberal status quo – and Giles is the most recent example.

As a young woman, I can say that sexist behavior so often perpetrated by the left is a major reason why I and many other women left the Democratic party. It’s gross to know that a bunch of crusty, old, pee-paw Democratic operatives are, at this second, scouring the web for nudie Giles shots as a way to discredit her and O’Keefe’s work.

The reasoning of these ACORN supporters is that the message is only as valid as the messenger is pure. By that “logic,” nothing is reasonable, including that statement.

Thankfully, fellow conservative bloggers like RS McCainLittle Miss Attila and others recognized early on and by way of SEO made sure that their mentions of search terms involving Giles and bikinis brought searchers to their blogs, effectively lampooning those of ill will.

The heat on James O’Keefe and Giles has been such that now ACORN is targeting them for allegedly violating the state’s two-party consent laws in regard to recorded conversation; however the law appears to be murky with differentiating between audio and video recordings. Two citizen journalists exposed a taxpayer-funded group who gave advice on how to skirt the IRS and enslave children in a sex trade and the Baltimore’s city state’s attorney may target the journalists – and not those all-too-willing to facilitate the sexual abuse of minors. I’ve a feeling that if “Dateline NBC” taped their “To Catch a Predator” in Maryland, the pedophiles would be exalted as victims and the show’s producers as bad people for exposing the criminality.

No one on the Left has remarked how awful it was that not a single ACORN worker reached out to Giles and offered to help get her out of a life of prostitution instead of helping to place her into a brothel; or how her “pimp” wasn’t reprimanded for the sexist way in which he used his girlfriend to further his political agenda. The ACORN women have filed suit against O’Keefe and Giles for the “extreme emotional distress” caused when these women were forced to face the their own corrupt characters on tape. Were I Giles, I’d counter-sue for the “extreme emotional distress” brought on by the realization that taxpayer-supported, systematic sexism (by way of facilitating the sexual slavery of women) is considered less of an infarction in this country than two-way consent.

That tells you where women lie in ACORN’s priorities; we’ll see where they lie with the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office.

That is was an investigation and not an ACTUAL “pimp and ho” who walked in to these offices is a weak defense at best and completely irrelevant to the conclusion. The end would remain unchanged regardless whether or not the means were known as subterfuge or real; the sad part is that were this an actual prostitution duo wanting to import children in for a brothel, that brothel would likely exist by now.

A defense fund was established for Giles; she’ll need all the help she can get. I love how they’re calling ACORN’s bluff and willing to drag them into a full-on trial where ACORN’s every misdeed since their inception will be scrutinized.

Breitbart and Giles Talk ACORN Lawsuit on Fox News

In the first two of what will inevitably be a multitude of ACORN Baltimore lawsuit related media hits, Andrew Breitbart spoke with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News Channel last night while Hannah Giles (and her attorney Kelly Shackelford) spoke with Sean Hannity:

The clips give a basic overview of a lot of arguments that we’ll be seeing as the case unfolds. Breitbart chastises ACORN for infringing on free speech, Giles finds ACORN’s arbitrary $5 million dollar figure “funny,” and both make the case that it is at least a bit ironic that ACORN plans to waste more of our tax dollars in a law suit against the people who exposed the extent to which they are wasting our tax dollars….

Both also note that ACORN Chief Organizer Bertha Lewis thanked the filmmakers for exposing the corruption in her company—this will be hard for ACORN to reconcile in court when Bertha Lewis trots out two ex-employees she terminated to make the case for ACORN’s victimhood.
